“The attraction, desire, imagination and childlike wonder this planet inspires is undeniable—and irresistible. As are the Aries folk themselves.”
Action! That is the name of the game for the Ruling Planet of Aries Sun Sign, Mars. This forward movement is even apparent in its symbol, a circle with an arrow emerging from it, pointing toward the sky at a 45-degree angle. It is said that the circle represents a warrior’s shield and the arrow, a spear representing the warrior Roman god Mars or Greek god Ares. More subtly, (maybe?) it represents the male sex and iron. I think you can read between the lines on that one. Now, if your mythology lessons still live in your mind, you might be able to remember the two gods were viewed differently, with Rome’s being considered more of a protector. In fact he is also referred to as the god of agriculture, which makes sense if you reason it out. He protected the land by ensuring conditions that would allow the land to be fruitful and by fending off enemies who threatened to take the land. By protecting the people’s food source, he was protecting them too, not so much violence for violence sake. On the other hand, Greece’s god was considered one who engaged in violence just for that sake. So why does the Astrological Sign’s name follow the bad god’s name and the Ruling Planet the good god’s (using these terms loosely of course)?
Wait…in true Aries fashion, it seems we have gone off (boldly I might add) in other directions! To get back on track, let’s save the Aries nomenclature explanation for another post so we can focus on the Ruling Planet Mars, the topic of this post (remember?). Suffice it to say the discussion will include the confusing mythological names, the constellation and the animal (the Ram)…oh and its fleece, of course.
Back to the business of Mars. It’s presence and boldness has an attraction that’s hard to resist. The fourth planet from the Sun is the Solar System’s second smallest and half the diameter of Earth, yet it is visible to our naked eyes! Part of this is because of its elliptical orbit (or as the astronomers call it, orbital eccentricity) that places it close to Earth at certain times; its cloudless atmosphere (unlike Venus’, which makes it harder to see despite it being closer…a typical female); and let’s not forget the aka for Mars: the showy Red in the Planet, the iron oxide dust coating its terrain. Currently, there are 5 functioning spacecraft around or on The Red Planet…3 traveling its orbit and 2 on Terra firma. Curiosity is winning us over as Mars’ latest suitor, enamoring most of us back here on Earth with amazing imagery and virgin information. Oh, how we want it to be so, evidence of life or that there once was, because wouldn’t that mean we could live there in the future? We’ve even conjured up Martians, asking them to take us to their leader, apparently not minding a bit if we have to share living space! And what about the devotion of the Mars500 crew of six? Granted, the mission was broken up into various stages, but can you imagine that 6,000 applied for the third 105-day stage?
“Mars has a place in everyone’s Zodiac Chart—a house and a sign—and it’s there you’ll likely have lots of energy bubbling to the surface in a manner characteristic of the sign.”
Yowza! This can’t get much sexier! The attraction, desire, imagination and childlike wonder this planet inspires is undeniable—and irresistible. As are the Aries folk themselves. That said, Mars has a place in everyone’s Zodiac Chart—a house and a sign—and it’s there you’ll likely have lots of energy bubbling to the surface in a manner characteristic of the sign. If it’s in your Fourth House it could mean that your home is a place of activity…the bed of activity for the next revolution, perhaps? You might even find the color red throughout the home as a subtle, practical design element if it’s in an Earth Sign, or, maybe it’s in bold, sweeping statements if the sign is in Mars’ Element of Fire. And, as Mars transits through a Birth Chart, it often serves as a trigger of action when it aspects a natal Celestial Body. What is Mars sparking in your Chart?
